CRIMINAL
Since 2001, Rivera-Avilés has litigated more than 600 felony cases, involving Alcohol, Drugs, Weapons, Domestic Violence, Thefts, Homicide, Credit Card Fraud, and others. In 2001-06, she worked as Defense Lawyer at the P.R. Society for Legal Assistance (SLA), litigating cases at the First Instance Court of Ponce. In 2007-13, in her private practice, she also litigated criminal matters in various courts.
CIVIL RIGHTS
As an Attorney at the Puerto Rico Department of Justice, in 2014-18, Rivera-Avilés litigated more than 120 civil cases including cases of Political Discrimination, Employee or Sexual Harassment, Police Brutality, and others. For example, Rivera-Avilés defended a Secretary of Justice, the Secretary of Corrections, the Secretary of Health, and the Mayors of Canóvanas, Ponce, and Guayama.
CIVIL
Rivera-Avilés has extensive experience in Family Law, Inheritances, Contracts, and Torts. Also, she has represented insurance companies, retail stores, vehicle leasing companies, and other businesses.
MEDICAL MALPRACTICE
Since 2014, Rivera-Avilés has represented professional clinics, and private and public hospitals against claims of medical malpractice. For example, she represented the Bayamón Regional Hospital, the Caribbean Medical Center in Fajardo, and the Professional Hospital in Guaynabo.
APPELLATE RESOURCES
Rivera-Avilés has presented multiple cases for appeals before the Puerto Rico Court of Appeals and the P.R. Supreme Court, both criminal and civil cases.
DISABILITIES
Rivera-Avilés has extensive experience with cases concerning disabled students in public schools, under the federal law known as the Individuals Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
